Fashion loves to play with preconceptions, and the Saks Potts duo would certainly not argue with that. Preconception number 1: talent comes with age. Aged only 19 when they launched their label in 2014, Cathrine Saks and Barbara Potts have proved that freshness and spontaneity are the qualities needed to succeed in the fashion business. Ever since they first met at nursery, the two friends have always wanted to create something together. Influenced by their parents (all self-employed) and on the advice of Barbara's father who runs a successful company, they let their creativity do the talking without a second thought. Their idea: create colourful coats that they wanted to wear but couldn't find anywhere. Preconception number 2: don't start without a good education. Because they were young, the two friends founded their brand while they were still students. While Cathrine was studying fashion, Barbara was busy learning art history. Since then, Cathrine graduated in fashion design and tailoring while Barbara attended various courses at Central Saint Martins in London. Preconception number 3: a single product is not enough to build an aesthetic. The label's signature piece is, of course, a coat. The Febbe, which is the duo's first creation and is available in many colours for their debut collection, is a fluffy bright shearling piece that took the influencers' wardrobes by storm and forged a reputation for Saks Potts. It allowed them to develop more successful models, such as the Foxy, a coat embellished with fur (real or fake) and popularised by Cardi B, Lady Gaga, Kendall Jenner and Katy Perry. Preconception number 4: to succeed, you must follow the fashion cycle. Here again, Cathrine Saks and Barbara Potts have broken convention. Rather than divide their creations into collections, the two designers prefer to offer numbered lines, not necessarily following the usual season cycle. They also strive to reduce production times in order to move closer to a "See Now, Buy Now" approach. Saks Potts is certainly building the future of fashion, by not caring what people think.
