By Amandine Rouhaud | January 2, 2023
Icon of the 80s and 90s, Whitney Houston left her mark on an era with her powerful, inimitable voice. She may have found a disastrous destiny in 2012, but her largely tumultuous life and career bringing together music and cinema gets recounted in the biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody released in theatres on December 21st, 2022. We're reviewing some of her mythical looks.
A powerful, incomparable voice, looks that marked an era and several tracks that left their trace on music history: Whitney Houston is among the names that have traversed time, becoming simply iconic. Setting out to portray the story of her tumultuous life on the big screen was a challenge taken up by the director Kasi Lemmons, with help from Anthony McCarten (known for having produced Bohemian Rhapsody). Another sizeable challenge was achieved by the British actress Naomi Ackie, charged with embodying the icon at the heart of the film.

When it comes to style, Whitney Houston was a proud ambassador of iconic 80s looks.
From her first appearances in pop colours or rock'n'roll apparel, in a short jacket and leather boots, the Voice, as she was often referred to, shone brightly, each outfit more iconic than the rest.

In 1991, when she was appointed with the serious task of singing the American national anthem at the Super Bowl, she dressed in a white tracksuit. The cut was large and oversized --- typical of the early 90s. Whitney Houston was only 27 years old at the time and the performance remains one of the most iconic of her career. The political context, her voice, her career, which was booming --- all the conditions were perfectly aligned to turn this moment into one of grace.

When the singer appeared onstage in South Africa in 1994, her performance was symbolic and almost political. The country had just ended apartheid and Houston was there to celebrate the newfound peace. Dressed in a fully gold look, her glamour and class (and voice, of course), made a real impression.
