Long-time relegated to the ranks of an old-fashioned jewel, pearls have recently been making a noticeable comeback, now featuring in jewellery collections for several seasons. Why? Designers are ready to give them a second life. Cooler, more contemporary and still just as chic, pearls are the new adornment for fashionistas. Leading this revival is Japanese designer Mizuki Goltz, founder of the Mizuki label established in 1996. Its speciality: Freshwater pearls, cultivated in China, each with a unique shape, giving them full charm. Wanting to bring a little warmth, femininity and modernity to this age-old jewel, upon finishing her studies, the young designer launched her label with her husband, Alan Goltz. Graduating with a degree in Sculpture from the School of Visual Arts in New York, the designer quickly put her original and innovative aesthetic into action.
After spending her childhood in Japan, she moved to New York at the age of 10 and later settled in California with her husband. It is precisely these three worlds that she aims to bring together through her creations. The kanji (characters) that make up her first name, given to her by her grandmother, Mizuki, are also at the heart of her jewellery design. Meaning "purity", "vitality" and "fluidity", they represent concepts regularly apparent in her work.
Although used to working with 14-carat gold, Mizuki Goltz equally loves to employ more unusual materials. Clearly seen in her use of leather as well as diamonds, always cut in an original manner. Integrating the most unrefined pearls into fluid contemporary jewellery lines, her creations have won her several awards, notably the Pearl Design Award at Centurion and the distinguished Pearl Design Award at the 2016 Couture Show in Los Angeles.
