Stone Island has been a reference in outerwear since its founding in 1982. The emblematic Tela Stella fabric, originally used to make truck-bed coverings, was to be the sturdy, two-tone material behind the seven jackets at the brand's outset. The limited collection took its inspiration from military aesthetics, seen in the compass-adorned arm-patches that were to become the label's signature all while hearkening back to maritime culture. The brand was founded by Massimo Osti who, after a few months, was joined by Carlo Rivetti who would cement Stone Island's ethos and visual identity and still runs the brand as Creative Director and President. Centering around textile research and development, the label is a leader in the conception of new fabrics and dyeing methods. It wouldn't take long for innovative designs to result: reversible jackets featuring thermoregulatory technologies, reflector strips, removable linings, and more. The constant experimentation and transformation of materials quickly became part and parcel of the brand's reputation, along with stylish but casual styles that worked for a diverse clientele. First adopted by young Italians in Paninaro in the 1980s, Stone Island coats and jackets would go on to seduce British football fans, who loved the flashier looks on offer. The light hooded jackets and quilted parkas would subsequently find their way into the wardrobe's of America's favorite rappers: Drake, A$AP, and Travis Scott would propel the label to international fame and secure its transatlantic audience. Collaborations with Nike and Supreme have only served to augment Stone Island's worldwide appeal, especially with trendy young consumers.
