Matthew Williams has lived many lives. Born in Chicago in 1985, the future designer grew up in California. During a visit to Six Flags Theme Park, one of his most iconic ideas came to him: a belt buckle inspired by the seatbelts on one of the roller coasters. A fan of football as much as he is of fashion, he eventually got the opportunity to combine his two passions by working as an intern at his coach's clothing brand. These beginnings were not followed by any other form of fashion education, and for good reason: Matthew Williams was never accepted into a school. But the talented designer persevered and headed for Hollywood, welcoming him with open arms. From 2008 to 2010, he worked as part of the Haus of Gaga collective, creating costumes for Lady Gaga. After meeting Kanye West (he notably designed a vibrant jacket that the rapper wore during the 2008 Grammy Awards), he joined his creative agency, Donda, where he took up the post of creative director. His colleagues were Virgil Abloh and Heron Preston. Together, the three designers founded the streetwear label Been Trill, which has since been sold to Pacsun.
In 2015, Matthew Williams went solo and founded Alyx, named after his daughter. His Autumn-Winter 2015 collection was a great success and placed him among the finalists of the 2016 LMVH Prize. Initially branded as a womenswear brand with unisex accents, Alyx has since diversified into a men's ready-to-wear line. Renamed 1017 Alyx 9SM for its first outing at Paris Fashion Week (1017 is Williams' date of birth, 17th October, and 9SM is the address of his original New York studio), the brand is now well-established in the fashion world and the designer is much-loved. The proof? He collaborated with Christian Dior Homme for the label's Spring-Summer 2019 collection and created several capsules with Nike. What more could you ask for?
