In 1973, Thierry Mugler entered the fashion world, with an avant-garde spirit and revolutionary vision. His eponymous brand perfectly blends contemporary boldness with French elegance. As a young designer, Manfred Thierry Mugler left his native Strasbourg for Paris, the French capital and cradle of the fashion industry. Upon opening his first boutique at the Place des Victoires in 1978, the brand saw real success from its very first collection, Café de Paris, featuring audacious cuts and feminine silhouettes. The brand then launched its menswear range, a collection that remains one of its most iconic, with structured shoulders, fierce curves, and the avant-garde silhouettes that are inscribed in fashion history. Then in 1992, Mugler perfumes were born. The first fragrance, Angel, created by Olivier Cresp, became the first modern gourmand perfume. Thierry Mugler, fashion visionary and accomplished perfumer, drew inspiration from dance, architecture and photography for his collections. 1992 also marked the brand's first couture runway show, at the Ritz in Paris. In 2002, Thierry left his post as artistic director, replaced by Nicola Formichetti and David Koma. In 2016, the brand shortened its name to Mugler, and the American designer Casey Cadwallader took over the brand's artistic direction the following year. Since its founding, the house of Mugler has collaborated with many artists, from the British singer George Michael for his song "Too Funky", the American actress Hunter Shafer in for the 2023 Angel Elixir Campaign, and also with Zendaya for the 2024 London premier of Dune Part 2, bringing back a vintage robotic look from its Autumn-Winter 1995/1996 campaign. While Thierry died in January 2022 at the age of 72, he is remembered as the precursor of a graphic, futuristic style that is timeless, bold and feminine.
